Inspired by the name European Sleeper, a night train that takes passengers to various destinations
across Europe, ‘Sleeper – a journey through time’ is the second exhibition in a two part
collaboration between visual artists Malin Neuman and Anette Kaplan.

Against the backdrop of technological upheaval, increasing automation, and persistent social inequalities, sleep is not understood here as a mere counterpoint to work, but as a space for reflection—a space in which time, productivity, and value can be renegotiated.

Anette Kaplan expands this space of reflection with an explicitly socio-political dimension. Her
installation “time fabric“ challenges linear models of time and counters them with an image of time
as an interwoven fabric in which past, present, and future are inseparably connected. Starting from
the continued high societal valuation of paid work – and the simultaneous invisibility of unpaid care work, predominantly carried out by women – Kaplan reveals how deeply patriarchal structures are embedded in prevailing concepts of time and labor.

In Malin Neuman’s textile works, sleep can be seen as a quiet form of resistance to an economy that defines time almost exclusively through its utility. Leisure time is often framed as non productive — a stretch of time where one doesn’t have to work in order to make money. One of the hallmarks of this time is the possibility of sleeping until waking up by oneself. By using fabrics associated with sleep and cross stitch embroidery, a technique often framed as a hobby, she seeks to explore connections between manual labor, artistic work and leisure time.
The first part of this collaboration was presented in October 2025 at EULENGASSE in Frankfurt
am Main – an artist-run space with a focus on contemporary and experimental practices.
