Finnish Video Art Summer Exhibition brings together works by five contemporary Finnish artists: Hinni Huttunen, Elena Näsänen, Anni Puolakka, Niina Suominen and Minna Suoniemi. The artworks move through memories, generations, microcosms, the unknown, and various in-between spaces. Together, these works invite the viewer to explore different narratives, emotions, and worlds unfolding through the moving image.

The exhibition is initiated and organized by Hinni Huttunen. The exhibition and Huttunen's artistic practice are supported by the Arts Promotion Centre Finland – The Arts Council of South Savo and Konstnärsnämnden (the Swedish Arts Grants Committee). The exhibition takes place at Detroit Stockholm, an artist-run gallery and a studio collective in Stockholm.

Hinni Huttunen is a visual artist working with video and photography. She feels passionate about self-portraiture, romance and never-ending embarrassing emotions. Huttunen graduated as a Bachelor of Culture and Arts from Tampere University of Applied Sciences in 2014 and as a Master of Fine Art from Kungl. Konsthögskolan in Stockholm in 2018. At the moment she lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden.

Elena Näsänen, M.A., is a media artist and filmmaker based in Helsinki. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki and at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. In her moving-image works, she explores identity, time, and memory. At the heart of her narrative is the relationship between people and their environment. Her works are characterized by a strong female perspective and thriller-like suspense. Näsänen’s works are held in the collections of the Serlachius Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma and the Finnish National Gallery. The Arts Promotion Center Finland has awarded Näsänen an Artist-in-Residence grant for media art for the years 2022-26.

Anni Puolakka is based in Helsinki and makes performances, videos, installations, drawings and texts in which biographical materials are incorporated into fictional worlds. The works play with the boundaries and potential of human animals as they seek meaningful and vibrant – sometimes drowsy or dirty – involvement with other beings, objects and surroundings.

Niina Suominen is a visual artist and filmmaker working with experimental moving image through animation techniques and analogue processes. She has been creating audiovisual works in the form of short films for more than twenty years. Suominen’s works explore the surrealism of late modern society and the contradictions within human realities. Her aesthetic thinking is rooted in the qualities of existing objects and materials, while her artistic practice is based on experimentation, improvisation, and new ways of processing materials. Suominen’s work is situated within the margins of independent art, experimental cinema, and underground practices. She lives and works in Merimasku, in the archipelago of Southwest Finland.

Minna Suoniemi is a Helsinki-based artist working with moving image and sound. Her practice draws from embodied experience, and she hs worked on themes such as control, body, class and family. Her latest project examines the materiality of the ageing body and transgenerationional bodily experience of being in-excess and excessiveness. Suoniemi's work has been exhibited internationally and her work is represented in Finnish collections including EMMA, Kiasma and the Finnish State Art Collection. She has held positions of trust and has worked as an artist, curator and pedagogue in various Institutions. Since 2014 Suoniemi works as a University Lecturer in Aalto University, Department of Art and Media.
