This exhibition explores masculinity by inviting viewers to reflect on how interpretation takes
shape in the intersection of image and text. Male identity is portrayed at/in different ages and
societies such as agricultural vs bureaucratic societies.
Does masculine essence exist? Is all masculinity toxic? Or do traits emerge through the
spectator’s gaze- in the ideas, emotions, and associations an image evokes or provokes?

Denna utställning utforskar maskulinitet genom att bjuda in betraktaren att reflektera över hur tolkning formas i skärningspunkten mellan bild och text. Manlig identitet skildras av Gary i/vid olika åldrar och i olika samhällen, såsom jordbrukssamhällen jämfört med byråkratiska samhällen.
Finns det en maskulin essens? Är all maskulinitet skadlig?
Eller uppstår egenskaper genom betraktarens blick – i de idéer, känslor och associationer som en bild kan väcka eller provocera fram?
Bio
Gary Clarke is an Irish–Swedish visual artist and playwright. A graduate of NCAD (the
National College of Art and Design in Dublin), he exhibited in Dublin and New York during
the 1990's. Since moving to Sweden, much of his time has been devoted to teaching and
playwriting, but in recent years he has become a member of SKF (Svenska Konstnärernas
Förening) and has had work exhibited at Nacka Konsthall, Eldhunden, and Konstnärshuset.
This is his first solo exhibition at Detroit Stockholm.
